Mount Cook

Another day off the ship had a few of us heading out in to try and catch a glimpse of the highest mountain in New Zealand. It was the first time we’d docked in Timaru and the we had the option of either mooching about the local town which seemed a little deserted or hire a car and see how far we could get in the time we had…

Seeing as I was the only one who drove on the left (correct) side of the road I was the designated driver and after we found a local car hire place we set off.

The place was pretty flat up until the mountain range. It basically gave us a view of the mountain as we drove towards it… but it was clear we were never going to get to the base of it with the time we had. Drive, drive, drive… Is it getting nearer yet? Nope. Still appears to be the same distance away?? Thankfully there was a nice little stop on route at Lake Tekapo. It was a glacial lake and the colours were just unbelievable…

No photoediting there… They are the actual colours… and no it didn’t look real in person either?! You can just see Mount Cook in the distance…

I’ll pop a few extra photos up just to give you an idea of how it looked…

I normally try and avoid getting myself in a photo but seeing as we were all taking about 3 million photos that day I guess it was inevitable I’d get caught in 1 or 2…

… and I guess I may as well leave you with a nice close up of the peak of Mount Cook… We can pretend we were standing on the top… I think at last count they made it about 3750 meters or so… Looks a little chilly… I’ll stick with pretending…
